More Joint Commission Hoops
Posted by WhiteCoat on July 7, 2008
Returned home from a short vacation to find these new standards for 2009 from The Joint Commission (aka “The Medical Marijuana Advocates“) sitting in my e-mail inbox.
JCAHO is actually cutting all the hospitals a break, though. They’re giving everyone 6 months to memorize all of these directives before they start citing us for not following them.
Now, now … before you start feeling sorry for yourselves, I did happen to note that humans are not the only ones that have to deal with TJC’s administrative hassles.
During our vacation, we did manage to take a trip to the zoo and I caught a glimpse of a Joint Commission monkey doing a site inspection of another monkey’s cage …
I also noted that those were the only two monkeys left in the cage.
The rest of the monkeys got fed up with all the micromanagement, left the monkey business, and went to go practice being penguins and reptiles.

If only we could evolve to the level of primates, we might get rid of our self destructive behaviors.
If you were to post this in hospitals, maybe “monkey see, monkey do”?
Nah, they would misinterpret it as monkey doo. That could be the next name change for the miscreants formerly known as JCAHO.

Whenever I see JCAHO pop up in the blogosphere (or in a memo) it always makes me cringe. Thank goodness our accreditation is done for the time being (one of Medicare’s requirements for reimbursement as a part of the new competitive bidding process)
& we’ve taken more steps since then to be wary of any unexpected surveys. For the most part, JCAHO rarely affects my job duties. They primarily like to target our clinicians & their careplans. I clicked on the link re: the SII & can’t even imagine what it’s like at a healthcare facility.

I left hospital based emergency medicine 12 years ago and opened an urgent care center. I am happy that I made the change and like my life and lifestyle better not working holidays and nights and not having to follow nonsensical rules.
I received an mailing from an urgent care certification agency that wants me to pay them for accreditation of my center. They have WILLINGLY engaged JCAHO to formally acredit urgent care centers. Are they mad?
